The principal theme of this triptych commissioned by Adriaan Reins is the lamentation on Golgotha. Jesus' body has just been lowered from the cross and his mother kneels alongside in prayer. Christ's disciple Saint John gently removes the crown of thorns. A distraught Mary Magdalene sits behind Jesus' mother. Mary Magdalene's griefstricken pose was inspired on a painting by Rogier vander Weyden.
