Shortly after Jan Floreins had commissioned his little triptych from Hans Memling another hospital brother Adriaan Reins decided to follow his example. The principal theme in this case is the Lamentation on Golgotha. Brother Adriaan is shown kneeling on the left wing accompanied by his patron saint Adrian. The right wing contains the figure of Saint Barbara who was believed to protect her devotees from sudden death without receiving the final sacraments.
