About this artwork

This map is rare for several reasons. The first reason relates to the fact that it is the only Blaeu map of the Netherlands that is still preserved in Belgium or the Netherlands. Furthermore, it is also rare that a map that was mounted as a wall card was kept for centuries. This aspect ensures that it has an important calibration value. The map refers to a crucial period in the history of the Netherlands and is therefore important in the collective memory. The artistic value of the card is reflected in the craftsmanship of the printers Willem Jansz. and Joannes Blaeu (Amsterdam) the engravers Josua vanden Ende and Hessel Gerritsz. and the draftsman Claes Jansz.
