About this artwork

This map is rare for several reasons. The first reason relates to the fact that it is the only Blaeu map of the Netherlands that is still preserved in Belgium or the Netherlands. Furthermore, it is also rare that a map that was mounted as a wall card was kept for centuries. This aspect ensures that it has an important calibration value. The map refers to a crucial period in the history of the Netherlands and is therefore important in the collective memory. The artistic value of the card is reflected in the craftsmanship of the printers Willem Jansz. and Joannes Blaeu (Amsterdam) the engravers Josua vanden Ende and Hessel Gerritsz. and the draftsman Claes Jansz. Visscher. 3rd edition of the Blaeumap of the Netherlands from 1608The Antwerp Blaeu map was named after the publisher of the map, a member of the wellknown Amsterdam printing family. This card is the only Blaeu wall map of the Netherlands that is still kept in the Netherlands.
