In the middle of the lower register Van Eyck painted two trompel'oeil sandstone sculptures. They represent the two saints who figured so prominently in both the commisioning and content of the work. On this panel we see John the Baptist who is clearly identifiable from the Lamb which he traditionally holds under his arm and pints to with his finger. As the patron saint of the Church of St John his presence in the altarpieceis selfevident.
