About this artwork

Four senior clerics at Saint John's Hospital commissioned this altarpiece for their church probably to mark the completion of the new apse in 1473 1474. They had themselves immortalised on the rear of the two wings which meant that on ordinary weekdays when the triptych was closed all that could be seen was these four praying figures and their patron saints. The shutters were opened on Sundays and feast days allowing the hospital's residents to admire the painting in all its glory. The central panel shows the Virgin Mary as Queen of Heaven sitting on her throne with the Christ Child. Themost important little scenes in the left wing are the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan and Salome's dance in Herod's palace. The whole of the right wing is given over to the apocalypse.
