About this artwork

Despite the lack of signature, the painting can be attributed to Gerard David with conviction. In the figure types the influence of Van der Goes is clearly demonstrable, while in the air the influence of Justus van Gent is particularly evident. It is an early work of the master in which he closely followed the Bible story. The transfiguration as a theme in panel painting hardly occurred, and this is also the only example of this theme in Gerard David's oeuvre. In Ghent's miniature art, among others from the area around Sanders and Simon Bening, more images of this theme can be found. One of these miniatures can be associated with the composition of David. This painting therefore shows that in the early 16th century there was a close connection between the various disciplines and that models were exchanged by artists. The shutters belonging to this painting were painted by Pieter Pourbus in 1573.
