This double portrait of an important man accompanied by his secretary is strongly reminiscent of Thomas Wentworth Earl of Strafford with Sir Philip Mainwaring the celebrated 1640 work by anthony van Dyck. It is also influenced by the art of Italy where Jacob van Oost spent a number of years.
