Although the painting is no longer considered a work by Robert Campin by most scientists, it is of great value. The iconography is rare. Joseph was depicted in the 15th and 16th centuries as the husband of Mary. However, this painting is completely dedicated to him. A performance such as this, in which the various episodes of a holy life are woven together in one composition, are for instance wellknown with representations from the life of Jesus, but hardly with the life of Joseph. The piece is important in both iconography and art history.
