About this artwork

The importance of this work for Flanders lies in the fact that this copy of King and Queen is the first of five and also the only one on the European mainland. In addition, the image has an important switching function and symbolic value for the history of the Middelheim Open Air Museum. After all, it was a piece of the very first collection of the museum. The purchase of the work was very controversial at the time. But that controversy ultimately gave the museum the advantage that later works were purchased in a greater openness of mind. It is also important to know that the image was purchased when Moore did not complete it yet.
