The middle of the horn contains a relic of Pope Cornelius beneath a small silver figure of the saint. Cornelius' attribute the horn relates to his name (cornu is Latin for horn). He was invoked as protector against childhood illnesses fits cramps and ailments of the head. He was also the patron saint of horned cattle. Numerous saints were venerated at Saint John's Hospital.
