Six medallions are engraved in the goblet: the Bruges municipal arms the crowned 'B' for Bruges and the emblems of Saint John's Hospital MAgdalene Hospice Saint Julian's Hospital and the Potterie. The text EENDRAECHT MACKT MAECHT (unity is strength) is inscribed around the rim. According to tradition the cup was used to drink a toast whenever a new head was appointed to one of the municipal hospitals.
