Verlat was in the period 18691874 teacher and director at the Academy of Weimar and in 18751877 visited the Near East. In 1877 he became a teacher and in 1885 he became a director at the Academy of Antwerp. Verlat formed among others Richard Baseleer Charles Boom Henry Luyten and Henri van de Velde. He played an important role in the Antwerp art life. Karel Verlat was a supporter of realism and naturalism but evolved towards a more traditionalist approach. However, due to his tradionalism, he came into conflict with the news workers over time. He was particularly renowned for his monumental romanticnaturalistic genre scenes with more than lifesize figures and animals.
