About this artwork

This monumental triptych by court painter Barend (or Bernard) of Orley with central Calvary was destined for the main altar of the burial church of the commissioner Margaret of Austria and Philibert II of Savoy Margaret's deceased third husband. The church is located in Brou (Burgundy). Margareta van Parma, however, decided that the work in the context of the establishment of a mausoleum for Charles the Bold should be placed in the Brugse OnzeLieveVrouwekerk. It is still there at the grave monuments of Charles the Bold and his daughter Mary of Burgundy the mother of Margaret of Austria. The work is of indispensable value for the collective memory because of its central place in the church.
